Page 21, Paragraphs 6 - 9; Page 22, Paragraph 1

Wow - I see I've already gotten as many responses on my new poll in 3 days as I did on the last one in a month. That's wonderful - keep the votes (and comments, and other feedback) coming, folks.

Page 21, Paragraph 6:

The skin on her face is soft, but she has little scratch-marks on her cheek. A butterfly flies all around her hair, and now it sits on the strip of white fur wrapped around her head. "How did you come to be with Hob," I say, "if he's dark and isn't well?"

Paragraph 7:

She sighs and says, "I come from a far-away place, and have been made to work for Hob. Hob has say over many settlers, for he is a..."

Paragraph 8:

Here she says something I don't understand. I say, "How's that?" She says, "It's like a wise man [or shaman], but stranger."

Paragraph 9:

"Hob no longer has a son to work for him on his big makings," she says now, "which is how I was made to come and work for him, and cook his food, and find wood for him, and so forth." She frowns when she says this. The lowing of an aurochs comes from way up and the reeds around the hut are grey and move like smoke in the wind. "Where is Hob now?" I say.

Page 22, Paragraph 1:

"Before sunrise he walked off," she says, "to journey to the settlers downriver there. He has many things to do, after which he's coming back here."

This is about as far as I've ever got in this book, by the way, so I'll be headed into terra incognita here soon.

  1. I've been refraining from making comments, because almost everything I want to say ends up being important further in the chapter or even further in the book. (I hope you do feel like reading the rest of the book... the other chapters gradually make some things from this first chapter more clear, as well as providing no small enjoyment on their own part).

That was a good catch, on the 'hob' definitions... it's kind of like 'weirding sisters' or 'hoodoo man'.

  2. Hey, Benny! Nice to hear from you, man.

"I've been refraining from making comments, because almost everything I want to say ends up being important further in the chapter or even further in the book."

I totally understand - I always badger my friends to read books/watch movies I'm really into so I can discuss them with them without worrying about giving things away.

I'm still completely excited about finishing it - it's just that my mild OCD prevents me from skipping to another chapter and from getting through the first chapter any way other than the way I'm doing it now. ;) It's going much faster than it was, but it still takes me about an hour to translate and transcribe 7-8 paragraphs.

It's funny - as great of a research tool as the internet is, I still get fully half my info for this blog from an old abridged dictionary I got for my wife when we were dating. I'm also a bit of an etymology freak, which also comes in handy for this.
